Recovery is a process unique to every individual in regard to both physical and mental ailments. Regardless of where you might be on the recovery journey, knowing how the proper level of care looks for you, personally, is an important consideration that will guide you toward progress and successful recovery. So where does Walden Living fit into your recovery and well-being? Here at Walden Living, our recovery-oriented services support the development of life skills to build confidence, improve quality of life, and implement positive life changes. We embrace individuality and the importance of personal experience in the recovery process. Our recovery-oriented living environments are designed to promote independence through supportive, individuated coaching.
At Walden, we approach recovery at all levels of the individual, with trained coaches who assist residents in overcoming obstacles and reaching their goals. How does coaching differ from mental health treatment? Treatment can be explained as an intervention supported by medical data; for example, when you go to the dentist due to tooth pain, the dentist examines the health of your teeth and assesses that you have a cavity. The cavity is then carefully filled and cared for based on medically supported intervention processes. In a similar fashion, when we seek out a mental health treatment provider, we ask them to assess our ailment and then present us with tools such as medications, coping skills, and exposures – much like the dentist who might give us instructions to floss and stay away from certain foods that are harmful to our teeth. We are then responsible for the continued implementation of these tools to achieve the desired level of recovery. If the tools are not used regularly, we might compromise prolonged success.
We support clients in the daily engagement of these tools to cultivate and sustain forward momentum along their individual recovery journey. Implementing coaching into the recovery plan brings accountability to help ensure that you are not slipping backwards along the path and assists in making realistic plans to move steadily forward in your recovery. At Walden, you will experience these benefits while living in a supportive and sober environment. While your doctor and therapist might provide you with coping skills, exposures and behavioral activations, your Walden coach will help you follow through with these assignments by making a plan with realistic expectations and positive support. We believe that the choices you make after treatment define the quality, speed and longevity of your recovery.
It is often difficult to move forward on your recovery journey while living in a setting in which independence and self-sufficiency are not required. Walden encourages both while offering a safe living environment conducive to starting fresh. Here, residents can experience living independently by developing useful life skills such as cooking, cleaning and budgeting, all while receiving positive support from our team of personal coaches who work individually with each resident on self-directed goals. Our coaching strategy provides a road map that sets individuals up for success upon their departure from Walden Living. We ask questions like “What do you want your life to look like?” and “How do we get there using realistic expectations?” to provide the structure and motivation needed for the achievement of goals. If you or someone you know could benefit from the assistance of personal coaching, consider if Walden Living might be a good fit.
